Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is an Indian female weightlifter. She won the 48kg category at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games in which Mirabai Chanu finished second and Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal.

Mirabai Chanu is the first woman to win a silver medal in weightlifting for India. Meera started her Olympic career from Rio in 2016. Then she was 21 years old. But, she broke down due to not being able to lift the weight in the first place.

The second and third attempts were also unsuccessful and ‘did not finish’ was written in front of his name. Meera returned with tears in her eyes. A year later, he gained confidence by winning gold in the 2017 World Championship, then in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

After this Mirabai Chanu got injured and was out for a year and a half. After this, the Olympic ticket was cut in 2020. Chanu has won medals in World Championship and Commonwealth Games. Early life and Family

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was born on 8 August 1994 in Imphal, the capital of Manipur, India. His mother’s name is Saikohan Ungbi Tombi Leema, who is a shopkeeper by profession, while his father’s name is Psychohan Kriti Meitei who works in the PWD department. Mirabai has five siblings. To light the stove in Mirabai Chanu’s house, the family often had to pick up wood and bring it. Mirabai used to carry heavy wooden bundles very easily on her shoulder, whereas her brother had to work hard in it.

Mirabai Chanu wanted to become an archer

Indian weightlifter Mirabai had told in an interview that all her siblings loved to play football. But she did not like to dirty clothes, so she wanted to choose a sport in which clothes are not dirty. So he decided to become an archer. In the year 2008, she also went to give trials for this, but she did not get any training on that day.

A chapter in the book changed the fate of Mirabai Chanu

When Mirabai Chanu was in class VIII, a chapter changed her fate. When she returned to school after missing out on training as an archer, she read in the book the success story of India’s great weightlifter Kunjrani Devi. It was from here that his goal changed and he decided to become a weightlifter. Later, former international weightlifter Anita Chanu became his coach.

Achievements of Mirabai Chanu

Chanu won the silver medal in the 48 kg category in the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and won the gold medal with a world record in the 2018 edition held in Gold Coast.

His biggest achievement was winning a gold medal at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championship held in Anaheim, United States. Chanu won the first silver medal for India in the 49 kg weightlifting at the Olympics on 24 July 2021.

He lifted the silver medal by lifting 87 kg in snatch, 115 kg in clean and jerk by lifting a total of 202 kg. Chanu opened the account in the medal tally, by giving India the first medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 (2021).

It is worth mentioning that Chanu has become the second Indian weightlifter after Ms. Karnam Malleswari (bronze medal at Sydney Olympics 2000) to win a medal in weightlifting and the first Indian to win a silver medal from India. Chanu broke her own record of 186 kg in Commonwealth Games, and set a new record of 202 kg.

He won a silver medal in the 48 kg category of weightlifting event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He lifted a total of 170 kg, of which 75 in the snatch and 95 in the clean and jerk. She qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but failed to win a medal after all three failed clean and jerk attempts.

In 2017 she lifted 194 kg (85 kg snatch and 109 kg clean and jerk) in the women’s 48 kg category and won the gold medal at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships, Anaheim, California, USA.
